Second Grade
Second Grade

Welcome to 2nd Grade!
Second grade is a year full of growth, discovery, and growing independence! Students build on the skills they learned in the primary grades while becoming stronger readers, writers, mathematicians, problem solvers, and classmates.
Our second graders learn through a combination of whole group lessons, small group instruction, hands-on activities, technology, independent practice, and opportunities to work together. We want our students to work hard, ask questions, build confidence, and have fun while learning!
What We're Learning
Reading and Phonics
Second graders continue building strong reading skills using HMH Into Reading and UFLI. Students work on phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and becoming more confident and independent readers.
Math
Using enVision Mathematics, students continue developing their number sense and problem-solving skills while learning new second-grade math concepts. Students have opportunities to practice skills in different ways and explain how they solved a problem.
Science
Our McGraw Hill Science curriculum gives second graders opportunities to explore the world around them, ask questions, make observations, and develop their scientific thinking.
Social Studies
Through Studies Weekly, students learn about communities, history, geography, citizenship, and the world around them.

Starting the Day Ready to Learn
Students may be dropped off beginning at 7:15 a.m. They can spend time in the cafeteria or start their morning with Morning Mile.
Second grade classrooms open at 8:00 a.m., and class begins at 8:15 a.m. Arriving on time gives students a chance to get settled, get organized, and be ready for a great day of learning.
If your child is absent on a Monday, please contact the teacher so a homework packet can be prepared for pickup.
Celebrating Good Choices
Second grade is about growing academically and socially. Students are learning to be responsible, make good choices, work well with others, and contribute positively to their classroom.
Students begin each day on green on their classroom behavior chart and have the opportunity to move throughout the chart based on their choices. Students who go above and beyond can move up to blue. Yellow and orange help students recognize when they need to make a better choice and get their day back on track.
Students record their daily behavior in the chart kept in their binder. Families should initial the chart each day so teachers know it has been reviewed at home. If a student moves to orange, the teacher will contact the family to share what happened.
Grades and Progress
Families can keep up with student grades and progress through Skyward. Because grading may vary by subject, teachers will communicate expectations for individual assignments and assessments.
Second grade uses the following grading scale:
E: 91 to 100
S+: 85 to 90
S: 75 to 84
S−: 70 to 74
N: 60 to 69
U: 59 and below
If you need assistance accessing Skyward, please contact Mrs. Pam Bowman at bowmanp@macschool.us.
Staying Connected
We believe communication between home and school makes a difference! ParentSquare is our main form of communication, and families are always welcome to reach out to their child's teacher with questions or concerns.
For an emergency during the school day, families may contact the MACS front office at 352 466 0990.
Joining Us on Field Trips
We love when our families can join us for special experiences throughout the year! Parents and guardians who would like to chaperone field trips are required to complete a Level 2 background check.
Questions about the background check process can be directed to Mrs. Bowman.
A Great Year Ahead!
Second grade is filled with new skills, growing independence, friendships, and lots of learning along the way. We look forward to partnering with our families and making second grade at MACS a year our students will remember!
