5th Grade
Welcome to 5th Grade!
Fifth grade is an exciting year at MACS! As the leaders of our elementary grades, students are given more opportunities to grow in independence, take responsibility for their learning, and set a positive example for younger students.
Our fifth graders change classes throughout the day, giving them the opportunity to learn from teachers who specialize in different subject areas. Students are challenged academically while continuing to build confidence, friendships, organization skills, and the habits they will need as they prepare for middle school.
What We're Learning
Reading
Using HMH Into Reading, fifth graders continue developing into thoughtful and confident readers. Students work on comprehension, vocabulary, fluency, and digging deeper into increasingly complex texts.
Writing
Through Top Score Writing, students strengthen their ability to organize their thoughts, support their ideas, and communicate clearly through writing.
Math
Using enVision Mathematics, students build on their foundational math skills while tackling more challenging fifth-grade concepts. Problem solving, mathematical thinking, and applying skills in different situations are important parts of our math instruction.
Science
Our McGraw Hill Science curriculum gives students opportunities to explore scientific concepts, ask questions, investigate, and make connections to the world around them.
Social Studies
Through Studies Weekly, fifth graders explore history, geography, government, citizenship, and other topics that help them better understand their community, country, and world.
A Day in Fifth Grade
Fifth grade students have a homeroom but change classes during the school day for different subjects. Both homerooms receive daily instruction in Reading, Writing, Math, Science, and other subject areas.
Our morning routine begins at 8:15 a.m., so students should arrive ready to get their day started. Students also have time for a morning snack and class change before continuing with their academic blocks.
Lunch: 12:10 to 12:40 p.m.
PE: 1:30 to 2:10 p.m. on regular school days
Art and Music: Once each week
Wednesday: Early Release
Because individual subject times vary by homeroom and day, families can refer to their child's classroom schedule for specific times.
Ready for the Day
Being prepared is a big part of becoming an independent fifth grader!
Students should arrive each day with their binder, planner or agenda, water bottle, and snack. Their binder is an important organizational tool and is used to keep track of homework and unfinished classwork.
Students should also come to school in dress code clothing and wear appropriate footwear for PE.

Homework and Responsibility
Homework gives fifth graders an opportunity to practice skills they learned during the school day. Students typically receive one workbook page Monday through Thursday that is due the following day in homeroom.
As students prepare for middle school, we encourage them to take greater responsibility for remembering assignments, keeping their binder organized, and coming to class prepared. Families can help by checking in regularly and encouraging students to develop good routines at home.
Grades and Progress
Our fifth grade grading scale is:
A: 90 to 100
B: 80 to 89
C: 70 to 79
D: 60 to 69
F: 0 to 59
Families are encouraged to keep up with their child's academic progress throughout the year and reach out to teachers whenever they have questions.
Glows and Grows
We want fifth graders to recognize what they are doing well while also learning from the areas where they can grow.
Our Glows and Grows system recognizes students for acting responsibly, committing to success, showing respect, and going above and beyond. Students can earn House Points for positive choices and may even be selected for the prize box or receive bonus House Points.
When students need a reminder, teachers work with them to correct the behavior and make a better choice. ParentSquare is used to communicate with families when teachers want to celebrate positive behavior or when there is an ongoing concern.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
Some of the best learning happens outside the classroom! Fifth graders have opportunities throughout the year to participate in field trips and other experiences that help connect what they are learning at school to the world around them.
Families who would like to join us as field trip chaperones must complete the required Level 2 background check before participating.
Staying Connected
ParentSquare is our main form of communication between fifth grade teachers and families. Teachers use it to share classroom information, reminders, updates, and individual messages.

Fifth grade is a special year at MACS. Our students are learning more, taking on greater responsibility, and becoming leaders within our elementary school.
We want our fifth graders to finish the year proud of how much they have grown and excited and confident about what comes next!
