My child is really smart. How can I have him/her tested for gifted?

Placing a child in the gifted program is a school-based process.

  1. During the second nine weeks, each teacher evaluates their students using a checklist with various categories. Each student is looked at to see if they stand out above their classmates in these categories.
  2. These checklists are then analyzed. Families of students with several checks will be contacted requesting consent for additional screening using the SAGES-3 assessment with deals with word relationships.
  3. Any student meeting a particular percentile will then be referred for evaluation by the school psychologist, after teacher and family interviews have been completed.
  4. Students found eligible for meeting the qualifications for the gifted program are then called for a staffing meeting. During this meeting, the team (teachers & family) creates an Education Plan (EP) with goals and objectives based on the students interests and needs for the student to work on at school and at home.

Even if students do not qualify for the gifted program, our teachers here at MACS do a great job of meeting students where their needs are, be it high or low. All students They challenge to work toward their potential.

My child has an Education Plan (EP). Now what?

  1. At MACS, our gifted students are served in small group sessions that we call Focus Groups. These groups meet for 30 minutes, 2 times per month and participate in problem-solving activities with other like-minded students.
  2. Each quarter, your child’s teacher will meet with our gifted consultant to discuss your child’s progress toward their goals, as well as brainstorm ideas to make sure they are challenged in the classroom.
  3. EPs are reviewed every 3 years. If you feel that a more frequent review is needed, please schedule a meeting with the ESE department.
